Dear Mr. van Vugt, I have obtained the same freeze when running a memory test from the BIOS of the computer.
The freeze seems caused by defective hardware on the motherboard, not by an issue with the NVIDIA card and X as I initially assumed. I would like to withdraw the bug report, or at least have it put on hold until the motherboard is fixed.
