Paul has not replied, but I can confirm that I get the exact same message if the "Test Connection" button results in "Failure" on the "Master Backend Connection Information" page. No matter what changes I made to the rest of the pages, I would get the same error if the backend was not contactable. Once I setup the backend correctly, and the connection test succeeded, then I no longer got the error, and the frontend install was successful.
