My setup is a little different so I'm struggling to reproduce exactly
the same issue.

On my machine I do see nouveau crash in the kernel if I plug in a
Thunderbolt eGPU with a monitor attached. That freezes the shell, but
may not be the same freeze as yours. I also wonder if a monitor is
relevant to your test case and whether it's just the Thunderbolt storage
triggering your freeze.

So please:

1. Check the kernel log for nouveau crashes; and

2. Test without the monitor. Does connecting just the Thunderbolt
storage reproduce the freeze?
