Thank you, Stuart for both the clues and the reminder that with a free, open source project, a little patience goes a long way.
What worked for me: sudo apt remove kubuntu-settings-desktop sudo do-release-upgrade -m desktop This ended in a reboot. When it came back, the login screen was frozen. I think you don't need to do what I did next: control+alt+f1 login sudo apt install kubuntu-settings-desktop sudo reboot Because when it came back, the login screen was still frozen. But after a minute or two I guess whatever it was timed out, a new logo appeared, and I was able to log in like normal. So, give it a try, folks: sudo apt remove kubuntu-settings-desktop sudo do-release-upgrade -m deskt Thanks again, Stuart, to you, all the contributors and maintainers, and all the users who make this software experience the best it can be. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2078589 Title: fight: desktop-base vs kubuntu-settings-desktop vs fontconfig-common: To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kubuntu-settings/+bug/2078589/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
