I do not see it as related to external problem. As far as I can understand the situation, it relates to certain configuration during initial loading of Live CD. It does not matter where wrong configuration came from: were it external program, or (stupid) actions of newbie- superuser.
I am willing to invest some time to reproduce problem if it would help you. I am sure it is pretty consistent. Then (because it is going to be dedicated computer) we will be able to analyze it at pleasure. Please, let me know if you want me to reproduce.
