I'm experiencing the exact same symptoms on my Dell 1520. I had use the backports to get my sound working, and when I did, the volume/up down using the multimedia buttons show a visual indication of change in the center of the screen, but the mixer control's master volume is unaffected (dont know if something else is changing instead).
