Philip, FYI the linux-modules-extra package is already installed.
Switching kernels is a PITA as this is a headless machine and I need to find an unused monitor and keyboard. But I would recommend that you not do anything more at this time with this bug as there is a possibility that the problem is actually in the ntp package.
