I've opened a PR upstream for a better error message: https://github.com/insanum/gcalcli/pull/733 . The log message appears above the backtrace but there is a delay between the message and the backtrace and the message is colored in red. It's quite visible.
I'm currently building a version with this patch in addition to the others and Unit193's NEWS entry. Lastly, based on Dave's feedback (thanks!), I'm pretty confident this will work.
