So you are running samba-gpupdate on a member server joined to a domain,
right? I tried that scenario here, where I have samba acting as a AD/DC,
and joined another samba instance to it as a member server, and samba-
gpupdate runs just fine. I'm missing something in this environment,
perhaps group policies need to exist for this command to try something
(and then fail, in your case).

Is your AD server a samba one, and if yes, could you share the minimum
necessary in terms of group policies that would perhaps allow us to
reproduce the crash?

In the meantime, could you run samba-gpupdate again with a high debug
level? Something like 10?

  sudo samba-gpupdate -d 10
