Using native drivers isn't really advisable when booting using
traditional firmware like BIOS or UEFI. (They were mainly designed when
using GRUB on bare metal such as running it as a coreboot payload)
The real solution for large disks is to use UEFI boot. It would also
theoretically be possible to use 64-bit LBA on a GPT with BIOS EDD but
GRUB currently truncates it to 32-bit due to assumed MBR.
I don't think there are any plans to fix this however.
