got this one in Hardy after doing a update-manager -d, after 1 or 2 days running fine, compiz.real crashed after a gdm restart by ctrl+alt+backspace, had an similar error after upgrading, restartet the machine, and no gnome-panels accured in screen, so tryed to configure xorg.conf, by hand, and suddenly it worked , with compiz on, and after that 2 days time i got the compiz.real crash after login
