I looked in /etc/group and /etc/passwd. The user had been deleted from both of them. But the group "UbuntuFun" (our fictional user account) was still in place. I do not if it is supposed to be deleted or not, but a workaround is to first delete the user account, then delete the group with the same name as the account, and then create a new account with the same username as the deleted one.
