I have the same problem on old VIA chipset, MSI mainboard 6380 (lspci attached). (Plug USB 2.0 stick in, dmesg->error -71 or -101 etc, but when ehci_hcd rmmodded everything works) It's weird that when I unplug the system disk and use it in nForce4 chipset, 2-year-old Gigabyte mainboard (can't show specs now) so that I have exactly the same Ubuntu on the other PC, the problem is gone or more precisely I've never seen this problem on the newer PC.
