I think we must all be very very careful here. We have two very distinct 
problems which show themselves with similar behaviour.
But, they're separated and must remain that way.

32 bit Ubuntu, within a particular (unknown??) set of circumstances (hw
config maybe) screwes up the usplash resolution, resulting in black
screen and slow boot times.

But 64 bits Ubuntu, which we are discussing here, has a completely
different matter. Still a black screen, but boot time is normal.

The first is caused by a problem whithin the installation (wrong res)
followed by a problem in vesafb-tng, which when set to the wrong res,
takes ages to boot. It shouldn't do that, IMHO. The second is caused, as
I was saying before, by completely missing vesa driver in 64 bit linux
that works with recent cards.

I really want to be precise, because I've seen many times the two
problems blending together and generating much confusion.
