What video driver and graphics card are you using?
Are you using Ubuntu, Kubuntu or another flavour?
Does the screensaver kick in or does the desktop get locked, before CPU climbs 
up?
If CPU is at 100% can you switch to a virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-F1) (or ssh to 
your machine) and attach gdb to the Xorg process? ("gdb -p 
PID_OF_XORG_PROCESS"). To make this useful, you should install the debug 
symbols (xserver-xorg-core-dbgsym at least).

that may be interesting.
