I had this same problem. I am running hardy. Having read it was a superkaramba problem I disabled it and everything worked fine. Later I tried again with superkaramba on, and find out it as superkaramba widget, wich monitors system activity was freezing the system. I can run superkaramba themes like LiquidWeather but not system activity monitors. Hope this helps someone.
