I was installing updates after a fresh install of ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy when I came across this issue.
As suggested by others, reinstalling ttf-opensymbol didn't work for me. There were still all those openoffice and python uno errors. What YCT said worked wonders. There were some minor errors like some of the directories in the command line were not found. But apart from that, everything went well after that, there were no more errors whenever I added or removed applications.
