The same issue here. My side of the story in detail:
I am running Ubuntu Gutsy on a Dell Inspiron 1420. This is no the Dell
re-mastered version of Ubuntu but the one released by canonical.

Problem: None of the applications are able to output any sound and crash
when attempting to play music. VLC plays movies with no sound but
crashes on trying to play music. I am submitting my report based on the
questions at : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems

1. On Gnome-alsamixer:
Have uncheckes all the mute optioins
and turned up all the volumes
?noticed an input error report on checking the input source option, likely
because not detecting any mikes!
    Report: (gnome-alsamixer:6536)Warning**:gam_toggle_get_state(). No idea
what to do for mixer element "Input Source"

2. Input: cat /proc/asound/cards
    Output: 0 [ Intel ] : HDA - Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfebfc000 irq 20

3. Checking permissions
   a. user privileges checked
   b. Sound servers:
Application sounds do not work. Dialog box crashes and refuses to
respond.
        System sounds work ok.
   c. Have not messed around with BIOS setting.

Ran the alsa-info.sh script. Forgot how to attach a file. Will submit
report and see if there is any way to attach the file. If not, will
paste the entire output in the next post.

Looks like a bug to me on the Dell Inspiron Intel sound chipset.

I also looked at the following bug reports:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/119898, and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/146690. I did install the
linux-backport-modules but still the problem persisited. The above bug reports
seem to suggest that the issue was sorted out in the 2.6.20 kernel. With the
2.6.22-14-generic kernel, I believe I am sitting on a new bug!!

I tried filing a new bug report but failed. There's one already so here
goes my entire report. Sorry for being so verbose. I think the duplicate
status is wrong as i have gutsy installed, updated alongwith the
backport modules installed.

the post."
