Another update: although I can't use the GUI to setup VPN, I was able to setup VPN using cli, currently I do the following to make the interface work again:
sudo ifconfig <id> up sudo dhclient <id> After this a IP address is assigned and I can use openvpn via CLI to connect. ps.
