Public bug reported: An update to my system has broken italics support in gnome terminal. This makes it hard to edit latex files with VIM, since VIM will show all text within \emph{} as boxes. If I type the following command at the prompt
=> echo -e "\e[3mfoo\e[23m" I get three empty boxes where the letters "foo" should be. See the attached screenshot.
