On T40, T41 computers, the same problem occurs, even with Win XP. Some even suggesting to try with linux before flashing bios !... It looks highly possible that the real origin is a defective southbridge controler, probably a model used with many motherboards. I observed a curious randomly behaviour in the defect, believing that what I tried the day before to solve the problem had some effect before it happens again. This looks like an electronic problem, probably something to do with high speed of signals with USB2.0 standard. When you come back to USB 1, it works. If some older kernels are using different codes to access USB 2.0, they also could help...
