Michael, Thanks, the init script was the right pointer. I turns out that the sysfs interface changed slightly in 2.6.24, which broke the script. I filed a new bug report against wacom-tools: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wacom-tools/+bug/177878. It's a trivial fix, but it's kind of a moot point until this issue is taken care of: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wacom- tools/+bug/175050.
