I briefly tried to reproduce this using X, but was unsuccessful, but going back to Wayland, I was able to reproduce it. This time I did a Ctrl-Alt-F3, and then a Ctrl-Alt-F1, and typed my password, and could then click gnome-shell widgets okay.
