I can confirm this as this issue occurs for me as well.

I connect to Internet using pppoe via a Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
79c978 [HomePNA] card, configured with the option homepna = 1. The
connection is configured using pppoeconf and works as intended in most
cases. The problem is that nm-applet is showing that NetworkManager is
not connected to any network (even though it works fine using firefox,
apt-get etc).

I can start and stop the connection correctly from the "Dial up
connections" options in nm-applet.

The big issue is that applications such as Pidgin and Evolution does not
recognize that I'm connected to internet and therefore not start up
correctly. In the case of Pidgin the message "Available waiting for
network connection" is shown and no contacts are shown until I re-enable
the accounts. The problem in Evolution is that it is always started in
offline mode, and therefore does not check for mail until I have set the
application in online mode.

I use Ubuntu 7.10 installed from alternate version. All applications
installed from the repositories.
