Hello Steve and thanks for your bug report. It seems that dovecot is failing to start because a systemd mount unit has been masked:
Failed to restart dovecot.service: Unit var.mount is masked. I think this can only be the result of manually masking the unit via `systemctl mask`. In this case the problem you reported here is a local configuration issue rather than a bug in Ubuntu. You can get help for these kind of issues in the Ubuntu Community Support channels [1].
