Hi Dan, I second your opinion and will also second your issue added to the Gnome project.
As a 15+ year Ubuntu user it has always surpriosed me that in Software the search was hidden; the only reason I open Software, is to find some program to install. Since I know my way, it never bothered me enough to actually file a ticket. Until today, as it should be my responsibility too, to contribute to the open source projects.
