Hi Vincent, there were various related issues and we need to be clear what is 
fixed and what is open.
The one we have fixed here was only a less useful error message.

To check if - whatever exact case you hit - is fixed in a newer release
I recommend trying to upgrade (if you have a test system that allows
that easily) or trying [1] which allows testing newer versions in the
latest LTS.

And then if you've identified a version that works (or even if not) I'
ask you to file a new bug (feel free to refer to this one for
similarity) for a new discussion about what we could fix and how. Please
be specific about the commands you use so that one can reproduce exactly
the same (as I said there seem to be various tpm related rough edges
left).
