It sounds like you are getting spurious mouse button (or even keyboard)
events from one of your input devices, which will randomly break drag
operations. This does happen to people occasionally and in every case
(so far) it turns out to be a broken input device.
Please try unplugging all input devices from the machine and then adding
them back in one-by-one. Please also try a different mouse if you can,
and hit all the keys on your keyboard in case one of them is sticking or
causing unwanted events.
