Exactly the same problem here, if I remove the "splash" parameter from the boot string it seems to work fine. but when it has the "splash" parameter sometimes it freezes after that same message:
"usplash: Setting mode 1280x1024 failed usplash: Setting mode 1024x728 failed......" and sometimes it works.
