I suggest that the hplip maintainers update the file

hplip/hplip-systray.desktop.in

by adding this line at the end:

  NotShowIn=GNOME;

I think doing this will close:

- https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1770027
- and a lot of other downstream bugs like
