Public bug reported: Marketability enhancement:
An enhancement for ubuntu (and other linux distros) that is a must have in the commercial, connected space is support for Desktop Sharing via Web Conferencing. Currently none of the major vendors for web conferencing appear to support Desktop Sharing for Linux distributions, and there appear to be no packages for simple desktop sharing/presentation akin to the Microsoft NetMeeting type of function. VNC and RDP are not the same thing, as these are more aimed at remotely controlling a desktop: True Desktop Sharing via web conferencing requires little or no software to be installed on the "viewer's" Client: Both have limitations across the internet, requiring special firewall settings and permissions, which is unrealistic in many scenarios. Why is desktop sharing important? More and more business is conducted by web presentation, often requiring "real-time" application presentations. Providing Support, Training, Sales, and other business functions via web conference are VITAL to software and solutions vendors in today's marketplace. Currently, presenters are obliged to control a MS Windows based client to be able to use any screen sharing based presentation techniques. Customers are more easily persuaded to take up a technology if they "see it" in action. The Ubuntu Gutsy desktop is a very presentable environment which generally garners approval from most I demonstrate it to - until we try to do so via the web. Commercial Web Conferencing Vendors assessed for Linux desktop support at the time of reporting this bug are: ================================================================== =>Webex http://www.webex.com =>Telstra webex (https://telstra.webex.com) - Cannot present, but can participate in meetings and view desktop presentations =>Placeware (Now replaced by LiveMeeting - Microsoft) - Cannot participate in meetings =>Skype Extras - nothing available for non-Windows desktop sharing. =>CitrixOnline (GoToMeeting.com) - Windows-only installation of desktop tool required. There needs to be an open-source presentation option which either interfaces with the commercial providers, or provides direct host-client via port 80 where the client requires only a browser (running an applet or some other control perhaps). Even a desktop tool that interfaces with Windows Netmeeting would be a great start. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- No available method to perform web conference desktop sharing - impossible to use web conferencing to promote Ubuntu Desktop without using another OS that supports desktop sharing for web presentations https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/176021 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
