Thanks. That confirms there is no EDID coming from the screen, so Linux
has to guess about the signalling method.

Turns out you're not the first to encounter this bug:

So the good news is the hardware is not faulty but just unusual.

One user says:

However note that changing the BIOS mode probably requires reinstalling
Ubuntu after that. Still, it sounds well worth trying.
