It would probably also help to know what hardware you have. Maybe attach a copy of your /var/log/dmesg, which will contain all the messages about your kernel detecting your ethernet hardware.
If you can poke around with mii-tool or ethtool (see if they show the NIC has a link when it boots up, or if the kernel doesn't know what's going on, not just network manager).
