I noticed that cURL gives a "wrong ssl version" type of error when the scheme of an URL is "smtps://"; fixed by removing the 2nd "s", giving "smtp://" (even though it's still an SSL connection). It's bizarre. Perhaps it's a long shot, but if getmail is in some way internally forming an URL scheme of "pop3s://", it might be worth a look particularly if cURL libs are used.
