Thanks for this bug report. Can you test the latest Gparted version 0.3.3-2ubuntu6.1 in Linux Ubuntu Gutsy and confirm if you can still reproduce the crash?
Concerning the ext2-ext3 story, I don't know if this idea is possible but you can open a separate bug report about that missing feature.
