Yes, the problem is still there using today's live CD. Booting in safe
graphics mode doesn't work either.

Ideally, the setup process would identify the notebook as a Sony Vaio SZ
and install the requisite drivers for both the Intel GMA X3100 and the
nVidia 8400M GS, put in appropriate xorg.conf files and the script that
selects between them, as described here:

At the moment it's very time-consuming to figure out exactly what is
needed, and is well beyond what could be expected of a Linux newbie.
