@Hui Wang After I powered off the machine instead of a reboot, the HSP/HFP mode is now working.
However there are two things to note, that might be related to this problem: 1. In the sound settings menu (I'm using Linux Mint Ulyana) I cannot play a test sound in HSP/HFP mode, only in A2DP mode. 2. The sound quality is significantly worse when using HSP/HFP. It really sounds like using a telephone / landline connection.
