Public bug reported: I recently installed Gutsy on a laptop, and now would like to be able to print from it. My printer is connected to a Mac Mini that is on the same network as my laptop.
Here's what I did, as best I can remember: * I clicked the System menu, and chose "Administration", then "Printing" * I clicked the "Show printers shared by other systems" checkbox * I clicked the "Apply" button * Since the above two actions had no visible effect, I clicked the "Goto Server" button, and typed "mac" (which is indeed the DNS name of the Mac) into the "Connect to CUPS Server" window that opened. That made the words "Local Printers" show up in the left-hand pane of the main window; and below those words I saw "iP1500". So far, so good; "iP1500" is in fact the model number of the printer connected to the Mac. * I clicked the "Make default" button, but that popped up an error box that said CUPS Server Error There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-forbidden' So I clicked the "OK" button on the error box. * I clicked "Print test page". It worked! * I figured that should be enough, so I went to a shell and typed echo heebie jeebie | lpr I saw lpr: Error - no default destination available. So clearly there's more work for me to do. * Since I couldn't think of anything better to do, I clicked the "New Printer" button. That brought up a menu of about ten choices; I chose "Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)", since that was the only choice that sounded even vaguely familiar. I typed "mac" in the "Host" box, and clicked the "Find Queue" button. That brought up a window with just one entry, labeled "ip1500", so I chose that, and clicked "Forward". * Then I saw a box that said "searching for drivers", and a dialog that asked me to either "Select Printer From Database", or "Provide PPD File". I had dim memories of using a dialog like this before, and being unable to find my exact model number, so I remotely logged in to the mac, and found what I assume is the right .ppd file at /private/etc/cups/ppd/iP1500.ppd, scp'd it to the laptop, and entered its name in the "Provide PPD File" area. I then clicked "Forward". * I saw a "New Printer" dialog whose data looked reasonable, so I clicked "Apply". I saw the exact same error box as before: CUPS Server Error There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-forbidden' At this point I gave up, and consoled myself by reading Eric Raymond's "The Luxury of Ignorance: An Open-Source Horror Story" (http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/cups-horror.html). That essay is now at least four years old. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Can't print at all to remote printer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/175340 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
