This is a reasonable solution, but it still requires much development, and
only supports versions of Windows Mobile 2 versions old, and even a limited
number of devices within that.

The ability to open a filesystem and/or charge the device would be
paramount, this should be built into the operating system.  My current
device (a Motorola Q) for example, will charge for 1-2 seconds, but then
disconnect - the only way to enable charging is to connect to an ActiveSync
computer.
