One week ago I installed the new Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha 1 on my Sony Vaio VGN-FS195VP and since then dimming the screen manually and automatically by switching off the power is working flawlessly! And this not only with the older 2.6.22 kernel but also with the new 2.6.24. It is now even possible to use Mathieu Laurent's tip from above and prevent the unnecessary sonypi module from loading by commenting it out of /etc/init.d/hotkey-setup, too. Great work!!
