After reading https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/67845533?hl=en I tried, on a whim, chromium-browser --disable-gpu and all works fine.
I do not know what that means, but thought I'd post it here for 'data'. Perhaps it will help someone understand where to look for debugging, or, even, where the bug belongs.
