Last week I moved to Ubuntu 20.04, and have the same distracting trails-boxes, that indeed disappear when Zoom is Off, but I absolutely need the Zoom. I have written a small script that toggles Zoom, and added it as a short-cut. Now, with a single key-press, I can toggle between Zoom On (for my eye sight) and Zoom Off (for a full desktop view, without the trails-boxes).
