This is still a big problem in Gutsy. I have never, repeat _NEVER_, let apport finished running.
When an application crashes the cpu spikes to 100% and the whole system becomes unresponsive. After a few seconds I usually manage to do a "killall apport" and everything is peachy again. It never fails.
