@bormolino I had exactly the same problem like you (also using the Nvidia 435 
driver). For me it seemed strange because the folder 
/usr/src/linux-headers-5.4.0-42-generic DOES exist and also DOES contain both 
files include/generated/autoconf.h and include/config/auto.conf...
Not sure why the error messages says these files can't be found. Do these files 
exist on your machine?
Anyway, what solved my problem in the end was to upgrade to the latest nvidia 
driver 440 (I upgraded via the "Software & Updates" UI (under "Additional 
Drivers") (I guess it just installs the package nvidia-driver-440)
I would guess what also would have solved the problem is to re-install the 435 
driver (nvidia-driver-435)
