Based on your last comment, I've marked this bug incomplete.

I'm unsure how familiar you are with motherboards, but you could have
given the motherboard a good visual scan (looking for swollen caps,
etc). Either way from your description, and age of the box, it's
possibly not worth the effort.

If you discover new information, you can change the status back to
"New", after you leave a comment providing this new information that
maybe helpful in finding any possible bugs.  I wish you luck with the
new desktop computer.

FYI:  On a c2d, I would have run a lighter desktop, and not GNOME found
on standard Ubuntu (desktop). It won't have had any differences with the
install, but I suspect it'd been more fun to use (based on a c2d-6600
which isn't unlike your c2d-6400)
