I was able to resolve the issue by:

mv /boot /boot.old
zpool import bpool
apt install --reinstall linux-image-generic linux-image-5.4.0-40-generic
update-grub
grub-install /dev/disk/by-id/$MYDRIVEID

I have no idea how bpool got exported but it seemed to happen about a
month ago. I noticed because I was stuck on kernel 5.4.0-33 and my
nvidia drivers wouldn't load any more due to the kernel and driver being
out of sync.
