As I mentioned in the description, I deleted the problem files and all
was well.  So no, it is not still an issue for me.  But I am concerned
that this can just happen for no apparent reason.  Does Ubuntu have some
way of limiting the size of log files?  7Gb should be plenty big enough
for /. I am not keen to leave clients with machines running an OS that
can just fail to start at random due to something so apparently trivial.
