Same problem for me, but with a twist. I get
gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0 as the only message in syslog. It happens at night a few hours after I stop using the machine, but only on nights when I leave firefox running. The machine is a brand new Dell XPS M1330 with an external monitor connected running the binary nvidia drivers and ubuntu 7.10.
