Update: I am seeing this same mistaken external monitor on an older Dell
XPS 501X[1] laptop too. Opening any application (System Settings;
Konsole) opens the window off the right-hand side of the laptop's
screen. I have to right click the taskbar and choose to move the window
from there.

Those are the only two laptops I've seen this behavior. (Dell XPS 502x
and 501x). I don't see anything in the bios or inxi -Fxrz output which
would suggest there is a 2nd display active. (Both have the latest
bios.).

I do not see the behavior when I boot other *buntu Live desktops. These
are old machines (2010-2014). It may not be important to fix it. (The
solution might be to go into System Settings, Hardware, Display, and
turn off the erroneous external monitor.).

If there is any more info or testing I can provide, I will.

[1] i5-560M 2.67Ghz; NVIDIA GeForce GT420M; Intel Centrino 6200 (Dell
XPS L501X laptop).
