Agreed. This seems like fundamental desktop functionality to me. My approach so far is to right click on the link, copy it, and then in a terminal type
xdg-open "<paste>" where <paste> is the pasted link. In case it's useful, here's an updated list from above, but clearly there should be a way for people to choose themselves what to whitelist.
